How does Mahfouz illustrate how fate is a major determiner of one’s happiness in life?

Mahfouz describes fate as an important factor of life, Said’s life is described as under-classed, and this under-class through economics and social class is a major factor in his absence of opportunities. Not only does his fate impact his life, but the impacts throughout his life can be described as unlucky, with the deaths of his parents, this fate impacts him as he experienced this tragedy.

This is unlike Rauf, whom is described as someone who has a beneficial fate, this fate ultimately leads to the start of his major newspaper’s business as Rauf so the opportunity towards economic benefit instead of going towards his own beliefs. This could be seen as someone who changed his own fate and ultimately his destiny.  

These two characters have major impacts towards each other, as at one point Rauf was impacting Said’s fate through the implication of education. Although Said’s fate was not impacted as much as Rauf. This ultimately leads to Said changing his view towards Rauf, as he believes he chose economic benefit over his own fate.
